After two years of student uproar and heated negotiations, administrators at UCSD released a proposed update to the campus "free speech policy" this week.
As we reported, in 2007 administrators attempted to institute a policy that would have required administrative approval for all protests and student events, banned political speech by employees and effectively assigned minders to student demonstrations. A student campaign led the administration to abandon that policy and the current proposal is the result of negotiations between students and administrators.
While they acknowledge winning an important victory on this policy, students are still concerned about restrictions on members of the public engaging in speech on campus.
The Policy will now go to the University Community for public comment until Dec. 1st. In the meantime students at UCSD should celebrate their victory. This one has been a long time coming.
