The student government association at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst attempted to take violating freedom of speech to a new level this week, passing legislation to both shut down the conservative media publication The Minuteman and the organization that publishes it, The Silent Majority. The exclusive reason: The Minuteman was critical and mean in its writing about one of the members of the SGA. This comes after videos surfaced showing the same student government member attempting to remove copies of the publication.
Fortunately, at least someone on campus recognizes the problem with shutting a publication or organization down because of the views it expresses. The administration, which has veto power over the type of resolution passed by the SGA, rejected the legislation.
