As we reported earlier, a number of legislatures are working to pass
bills to protect press freedom for student journalists. The bills,
largely a response to the 2005 Hotsy v. Carter decision in the 7th
Circuit Court of Appeals that allows universities in Wisconsin, Indiana
and Illinois to set up prior review requirements for college students.
Today the Washington bill, HB 1307, got one step closer to being law
when the House of Representatives passed it 58-37. Way to go
Washington—now if only more states could follow your lead.
