Manufactured Controversy Report: Manufactured Controversy

We’re joining our partners in releasing a report demonstrating that the campaign against the free exchange of ideas in American colleges and universities is nothing but a "Manufactured Controversy". The report identifies the major players, funders, and tactics and provides a blueprint for supporters of the free exchange of ideas to combat and defeat these attacks when they arise.

»UCSD Students Win Concessions in Speech Policy
After student protests and organizing against a 2007 draft of a speech policy for UCSD, students and administrators have come to tentative agreement on a new proposal.
»New Resource to Protect Free Speech on Campus
This week we’re releasing our new Free Speech Organizing Toolkit. The toolkit is designed to provide campus leaders and free speech supporters with the tools to work with higher education leaders to remove impediments to a marketplace of ideas on their campus.
»Liberty at Liberty?
Over the holiday weekend, we received numerous questions about whether Liberty University could de-recognize (therefore effectively eliminate from campus) the College Democrats. The question, however, is not that simple. While Liberty, as a private evangelical institution that is quite upfront about the extent to which Christian values control its content, probably can legally eliminate the College Democrats, there remains the important question of whether it should. In eliminating the organization solely because of the views it supports, Liberty is making a huge tradeoff—sacrificing the free exchange of ideas at the heart of higher education for adherence to its Christian principles.
»2009 Legislative Session—victories for academic freedom
While many legislatures are still grappling with state budgets and funding for higher education, the 2009 legislative season ended in victory for the free exchange of ideas this month. Bills that would have imposed restrictions on what can be taught and what students can learn in college and university classrooms were defeated in all of the states they were introduced—Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and West Virginia.
»Proposed UNLV “bias” policy continues to draw criticism
First the ACLU objected, then the Chancellor for the Nevada Higher Education System—now faculty are joining the calls to scrap the proposed “anti-bias” policy. The policy as written prohibits both genuine harassment and “written or verbal acts of intimidation, coercion, interference” when motivated by bias against a particular group.
The Center for Campus Free Speech is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the marketplace of ideas on college campuses across the country. We provide students, faculty, and administrators with legal expertise through our network of experts.
