Oregon (1999)

What do the Governor of Oregon and the lead singer of the rock band Everclear have in common?  Both John Kitzhaber and Art Alexzakis have signed a letter of support being circulated by Oregon students. Student groups from across the state have worked together to compile over 1200 signatures in opposition to any legislation that would limit what ideas and activities could be supported by student fees.

They hope their efforts will defeat an effort by the Associated Oregon Industries to champion such a 'gag rule' this session. Other signers include key state legislators, President Bernstine of Portland State University, and countless administrators and faculty. The coalition is also building a corps of 400 student advocates, ready to walk the halls of the state house to protect campus speech.

Update: * The bill was successfully defeated during the 1999 legislative session.*
