New York (2001)

A bill designed to nix the use of mandatory student activities fees at New York's public universities and colleges is currently pending in the state legislature. The bill, A5050 in the state assembly and S2733 in the state senate, would require the annual conduct of a referendum of the student body at each public university or college in New York to determine whether the student activity fees should be mandatory or voluntary. The bills would also require that student organizations submit all receipts and invoices in order to receive their funding.

A coalition has formed in opposition to the bill including the University Student Senate of the City University of New York (CUNY) and the Student Assembly of the State University of New York (SUNY). In addition, over 200 student organizations have signed onto a letter in opposition to the bill.
