New Jersey (1998)

In 1995, a bill heavily lobbied by industry groups was passed into law in New Jersey.  The law bars student funded groups from lobbying the state legislature.  It forces campuses to implement restrictive student fee policies that clamp down on campus speech.  Students that once advocated for state improvements in bike lanes, environmental policies, and lower tuition levels are left silent by the law.

Seeking to silence students even further, a bill has already been introduced this session that proposes additional restrictions on the types of student fees that can be assessed.

Update: * This bill died in committee during the 1998 legislative session *
