Senate Bill 1108 would have forbidden K-12 teachers from “denigrating American values and the teachings of western civilization” and forbidden college students from forming student organizations based in whole or part on race based criteria.” The bill died in committee.
Inspired by the criticisms of both David Horowitz and anti-immigration activists, SB 1108 would have directly stifled students rights to association and speech by barring student organizations organized around race. This could have prohibited everything from a black student union to a Jewish fraternity/sorority to any number of cultural organizations that contribute to the marketplace of ideas on college campuses.
